Real Taste of Japan Right in the City

The recent addition to one of the biggest malls in Johor Bahru has cooked up quite a storm amongst the locals and visitors from the neighbouring country alike. While others are travelling to Japan during this peak season, why not experience an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine and culture, right in the heart of the city instead?

Get ready to be transported to another country in a flash. It’s hard to imagine this first ever concept food court in Johor Bahru, laden with the classic feel of Japanese food streets, was simply located at the 6th floor of JB City Square. The main inspiration behind this concept was to introduce a place for the Japanese community in Johor Bahru to find their “home away from home” through a myriad of authentic Japanese dishes prepared by their fellow countrymen. Each of the 7 stalls present originate from a different part of Japan and the food are prepared by Japanese chefs. The tenants were carefully handpicked before coming to Malaysia, enthusiastic to learn about our culture while imparting their culture to us at the same time.

It is interesting to note that majority of the food ingredients are imported from Japan to guarantee the freshest and most original taste. Locals can expect to find never-before-seen Japanese cuisine in Japan Street. Instead of the popular sushi, ramen, omelette fried rice or Japanese rice balls, expect to find a range of other interesting fares. Some notable stalls and best-selling dishes include Ichie Hokkaido’s unique and healthy kamemashi rice bowl which is popular with patrons of the food court, and Omuta Daijayama that serves okonomiyaki and yakisoba. Not forgetting, sweet and distinctive desserts like mochi is a hit here. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience, to be able to savour the whole of Japan in just one spot!

On a typical day, Japan Street is a quaint, quiet place to hang out, unlike other overcrowded food court. With the sound of soothing Japanese music playing in the background, it adds a touch of serenity to the place. Japan Street is promising, even within just 6 months of operation and is expected to expand in the future. Plans are in the pipeline to bring in more Japanese products to cater to the growing market, though not in the near future. So if you’re looking to have a unique taste of The Land of the Rising Sun, Japan Street is the place to be! restaurantv15_3_5
